Higbee pitchers no-hit Clopton, split tournament games

Ernie Boggs and Will Spilman combined for a no-hitter in Higbee’s 9-0 win over Clopton in the Higbee baseball tournament on Saturday.

Boggs walked one batter and two reached base on error over four innings. Spilman issued a leadoff walk in the fifth, but got three straight outs to preserve the shutout.

"I am proud of Boggs for developing the desire to become a better all-around ball player at the plate, in the field, and on the mound," Higbee coach Dylan Wood said. "We’ve been pounding mechanics in the bullpen. First pitch strikes are crucial in keeping his pitch count down.

"When Ernie came out of the game due to our need to keep his pitch count low enough to be eligible Tuesday, Spilman came in and shut ‘em down to help Boggs complete his first ever high school career win on the bump."

Jamie Smith gave the Tigers an early 3-0 lead with a 2-RBI double in the first inning. Smith doubled again in the fourth inning and finished with four RBI.

Derek Rockett and Luke Ritter hit back-to-back singles to lead off the game. Spilman and Jordan Fuemmeler each had a double in the third inning and Chevy Grimsley had an RBI single as the Tigers went up by seven runs.

Jaxon Hudson hit a leadoff double in the second inning. Ritter finished the game 2-4.

The Tigers improved to 4-4 with the win.

Tigers edged by Sturgeon

Sturgeon held off Higbee 7-5 in the first game on Saturday.

Fuemmeler had a big two-run double to cut the Sturgeon lead to 4-3 in the third inning. Anthony White singled and scored to tie the game in the fourth.

The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the fifth inning and held on for the win.

Boggs had a single in the fifth inning as Higbee loaded the bases. Hudson, who was hit by a pitch, scored on an RBI walk from Ritter, but the Tigers couldn’t get a big hit to tie the game.

Rockett drew a leadoff walk to start the game and Ritter had a single as Higbee took a 1-0 lead in the first.
