Higbee’s Welch outscores opponent

The Higbee Lady Tigers continue to roll through their schedule. On Thursday they came away with a 52-16 shellacking of the Southwest Lady Wildcats on the road. Freshman Ronnie Welch continued her torrid scoring pace with 24 points on the night, which was eight more points than Southwest could score as a team.

Although the final score would indicate differently, the Lady Tigers got off to a slow start, leading only 8-4 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was also uncharacteristic of the girls from Higbee as they were only able to outscore Southwest 11-8, making the score 19-12 at intermission. “We played a bit out of sorts early on in the game,” said Higbee coach Tanner Burton. “We committed 14 first-half fouls and gave them 15 opportunities at the free-throw line.”

Burton’s team came out of the locker room ready to roll, outscoring Southwest 20-4. The Lady Wildcats were not able to find the bottom of the net at all in the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers won the fourth 13-0 making the final score 52-16.

“We got into our bench early with all 11 girls playing in each quarter. We really adjusted well in the second half and altered our style to stay out of foul trouble,” said Burton. “We found other ways to make our defense work effectively. When you cause 47 turnovers with 39 deflections and 30 steals you are doing something right.”

Southwest was able to get a steal and a layup at the 4:30 mark in the third quarter. That would be the last score of the night for the team.

Welch’s game-high 24 points bumped her season average to 19.7 points per game. Sophomore Isabelle Welch added seven points to the cause. Junior Emma Johnson and freshman Marilynn Ritter each contributed six. Senior Macey Whisenand and sophomore Kylleen Gibson added three apiece. Sophomore Addie White put in two and freshman Raegan Derboven rounded out the Higbee scoring by hitting a free throw.

The Lady Tigers defeated Prairie Home 65-32 then played at home against Keytesville after The Advertiser went to press and will travel to Mendon to take on Northwestern on Friday.
