Independence Day Party in the Park announces schedule

Posted

The annual Independence Day Party in the Park returns to the Fayette City Park on Friday, July 4, with a full day of family-friendly fun under this year’s patriotic theme: “A Flying Colors 4th of July.” Organized by Tristin Head and supported by a dedicated group of volunteers, the event promises traditional favorites, new activities, and a festive atmosphere from morning until fireworks light the night sky.

Festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with the Vintage Car Cruise-In and the parade line-up at 10 a.m. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m., winding its way through the park with patriotic floats, classic cars, and community groups. No pre-registration is required for parade participants this year, but organizers encourage interested participants to reach out in advance. A parade contest will be held, with prize categories to be announced.

Making a patriotic return this year is the presentation of the Quilt of Valor to a local veteran following the parade. This year’s recipient is Master Sergeant Bradley Patty (see separate article on the Front Page). The presentation by the Peacemakers Quilters will take place directly after the Salute to Veterans, by the Fayette American Legion, at the lower shelter house.

Following the parade, several events launch simultaneously, including the vendor show, food trucks, and the ever-popular Frog and Turtle Races at Lembke Field, sponsored by Central Missouri Transmission. Open to kids ages 12 and under, the races once again offer huge cash prizes of $250 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. Registration begins after the parade, and races start no later than 11:15 a.m. Participants are reminded to treat their animals with care and return them to their natural habitats following the event.

At noon, the city pool will offer free admission for the day with games and activities. The Fayette Splash Park remained closed as of this writing, as the city attempts to determine how to repair the filter system. Assistant City Clerk Julie Bowen said on Monday that workers are locating parts and hope to have the splash park open by Independence Day, but this cannot be guaranteed.

At noon, the annual Little Mr. and Miss Firecracker pageant, sponsored by CASA, will take place at the lower shelter house. Participants should check in 30 minutes prior to the event.

The afternoon features high-energy activities for young children, starting with the Power Wheels Races. Check-in is at 1 p.m., followed by the races at 1:30 p.m. Races are sponsored by the Country Club Bar & Grill. Simultaneously, the Howard County Sheriff’s Department will host a K-9 demonstration.

As darkness falls, the grand finale begins with a fireworks display presented by the City of Fayette. Donations are still being sought to help cover the $4,200 cost of the display by J&M Displays of Slater. As of Monday, $2,225 had been pledged toward the fireworks, which are typically covered by community donations each year.

In addition to the July 4 festivities, the fun begins early this year with the Wendy Sunderland Memorial Volleyball Tournament at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 3. The co-ed sand volleyball event will be held at the city park court with food, music, and concessions available. The tournament features three boys and three girls per team in a double-elimination format.

Attendees are encouraged to check the Fayette Party in the Park Facebook page for updates or schedule changes.
