Lady Bulldogs finish second to top seed Community

The New Franklin Lady Bulldogs could see the New Franklin tournament championship within their reach at the end of the first half Friday night. The Community Trojan girls were able to pull away in the second half, however, to record a 51-33 win to send New Franklin home with the second-place trophy.

“We had opportunities early,” said New Franklin coach Morgan Vetter. “We kind of had them in a bind there with foul trouble, but we had a lot of turnovers and missed layups that kind of let them get that big gap. Once they got that big lead, they were able to get those players back in.”

New Franklin led at the end of the first quarter 12-10, with junior Carly Dorson providing six of those points. Community was able to adjust and hold Dorson scoreless in the second quarter. New Franklin was only able to put up another six points in the second quarter but held Community to its second straight 10-point quarter so the teams went into the locker room 20-18 in favor of the Lady Trojans.

Community bolted out of the chute at the beginning of the third quarter with a 10-2 run, then extended that scoring run to 18-6 by the end of the quarter to gain a commanding 38-24 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Trojans continued to pour it on to finish the game at 51-33.

“We are still destined to do good things,” said Vetter. “We were the No. 2 seed and we got there and still hung tough, and learned and grew. I’m still proud, but we’ve got a lot of things to clean up.”

The leading scorer for New Franklin, Dorson, put in 10 points on the day with the six in the first quarter and four in the third. Senior Abby Maupin added nine while classmate Kristen Flick contributed four.

Juniors Addy Salmon, and Emma Rice, along with freshmen Tatum Hoover, Brooklyn Brown, and Brynn Belstle, each added two apiece to complete the New Franklin scoring.

New Franklin moves to 7-5 on the year and hosted the Glasgow Lady Jackets Tuesday after The Advertiser went to press. The Lady Bulldogs will follow that up with a road trip to play Community again on January 14 at 3 p.m.
