Lady Falcons run past La Plata in Glasgow Tournament opener

Posted

The Fayette girls opened the season with a win over the La Plata Bulldogs, 53-44, Monday night in the opening round of the Glasgow Tournament.

The win was Fayette’s first of the season and the first for Darryl Betts as a head coach. He took over the helm this year after serving as the team’s assistant coach last year.

“It was a good win, and I’m exhausted,” Betts said after the game.

The Falcons, seeded fourth, now advance to the championship side of the bracket to face top-seeded Cairo on Wednesday.

Fayette took an early lead, and after the halfway point of the first quarter, never trailed in a scrappy opening game. Leading 10-5 after eight minutes, the Falcons went on a 5-2 run over the first two minutes of the second quarter, sparked by a strong performance off the bench from Browyn Eubanks. The freshman scored seven of her team-high 16 points in the second quarter.

Fayette held a 27-14 lead at halftime, but La Plata managed to keep the game within reach from the foul line. The Lady Bulldogs scored half of their 44 total points from the free-throw line, sinking 22 of 37 tries for the game. They made eight of 15 shots from the line in the third quarter alone and sank six of eight in the fourth quarter. Most of those free-throw chances were from junior Claire Coy, who finished with a game-high 18 points on 12-for-15 shooting from the charity stripe.

“Claire Coy, at the end, was getting a lot of free throws. She’s a great player,” Betts said. “Browyn Eubanks came off the bench and face-guarded her. And that was the difference from the beginning, where it was tight, to separating for the victory.”

Fayette’s tenacious defense made things difficult for La Plata, which is now 0-2 on the season.

“The game plan against La Plata was to wear them out and not let Claire Coy get the ball,” said Betts.

Fayette benefitted from relentless play from sophomore Lasaydra Jackman, who made two steals in the first minute of the game, and senior Preslee Sunderland, who never seemed to run out of energy.

“She and Preslee are just menaces. Lasaydra is a firecracker,” said Betts. “Addison Powell didn’t get a ton of minutes because she got into foul trouble early. She really gets after it, too.”

Fayette finished the night with eight players in the scorebook, led by Eubanks’s 16 points. Senior Hannah Quint picked up eight points, followed by seven for Jackman. Junior Kay Sullivan picked up seven points and had a stellar night on defense.

“Kay Sullivan took two or three charges and was blocking shots at the end. She’s doing a fabulous job,” Betts said.

Sunderland picked up six points on the night with a 3-pointer and 3-for-5 shooting from the line. Sophomore Melissa Innes finished with five on the night, followed by juniors Maddox Wells and Addison Powell with two each.

The Falcons will have their hands full on Wednesday against a first-seeded Cairo team that finished 24-6 a year ago. They easily handled Slater in Monday’s opener 71-27 with double-digit performances from Avery Martin with 19 points, and Macie Harman with 14. The winner of Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal will play for the tournament championship at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
