October 21 is the last day voters may request an absentee ballot for the Nov. 3 general election be sent to them by mail. So far, more than 325 ballots have been issued by mail or in person by the Howard County Clerk’s office. This year, many voters are choosing to vote by mail in order to avoid visiting polling places in person amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In the 2016 general election, a total of 367 absentee votes were recorded. That election drew a strong turnout as 72.16% of Howard County voters cast ballots.
Voters who wish to cast ballots by mail must have their ballots notarized unless they meet specific criteria. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Friday to uphold the notarization law.
Only those who are aged 65 and older, live in a long-term care facility, or suffer from certain health problems may vote absentee without having their ballot envelopes notarized.
Registered voters who choose to vote early in person may do so in the Clerk’s office until 5 p.m. Nov. 2. The office will also be open for voters from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 31.
