Tied after three evenly-matched quarters, the New Franklin boys lost the final period by three points to fall to rival Westran, 48-45, in an exciting championship for the Sturgeon Tournament title on Saturday night.
The tight game saw 14 lead changes, and the teams were rarely separated by more than one possession.
“This was as close of a game as you will ever have,” said New Franklin coach Jim Schlotzhauer.
Westran and New Franklin are frequent rivals in tournament finals. The Bulldogs won the last matchup by nine to claim their own tournament title on January 11. Last year, the teams split in the same tournaments with one win each.
“Westran is a really good team, and we’ve beaten them once and played them to three. There is no reason for our guys to hang their heads for anything,” Schlotzhauer said.
Westran won the first quarter 16-15 and inched ahead by one more to take a 25-23 lead into the break. New Franklin won the third quarter 14-12 to tie the score at 37 each with eight minutes to play.
But the Hornets had the final say, outscoring New Franklin 11-8 in the final period to claim the tournament crown.
“I came away really impressed with our guys. We battled for four quarters and just came up a possession or two short,” said Schlotzhauer. “Westran’s switching defense was really tough for us to attack with their length and athleticism. We ran a lot of different offenses, but their switching negated most of what we were trying to run.”
New Franklin junior Caden Schlotzhauer led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, followed by Rylan Hundley with nine and Landon Shaw with seven. Lane Hackman added six, followed by Noah Hackman with five.
“This group is gaining experience on the court and hopefully learning with every win and loss. We just need to keep trending upward in these last few weeks heading toward districts,” said Schlotzhauer.
Cruze Haynes paced the Hornets with 13 points, followed by 10 from Jordan Black and nine by Brady Kallmeyer.
Saturday’s tournament final would be the final meeting between the two teams this season, as both squads head down the final stretch of the regular season before competing in separate districts. New Franklin is currently 14-5 overall. The Hornets hold an overall record of 16-4 with five games to go.
New Franklin was scheduled to face Class 4 neighbor Boonville Tuesday night after the Advertiser had gone to press. The Bulldogs travel to Cairo on Friday before returning home on February 11 for senior night against Slater.
