The second-seeded New Franklin girls ended a six-year reign of the Community Lady Trojans on Thursday evening in the semifinals of the New Franklin Tournament. The 50-29 win sent third-seeded Community to the third-place after six straight titles.
The Bulldogs now advance to play first-seeded Westran in Saturday’s championship game at 12:30 in the new gym. New Franklin hopes to hoist the first-place trophy for the first time since winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.
Junior guard Lily Chitwood scored seven of the Bulldog’s first nine points as they built a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. They added another 13 in the second quarter while holding Community to only one field goal, taking a 26-16 advantage at the half.
“We kept them under 20 first-half points, which is our goal,” said New Franklin coach Parker Gross.
The second half was more of the same for the hometown Bulldogs, who were never threatened as they won the contest 50-29.
Chitwood led the way for New Franklin, scoring 17 points. Senior Emerson Eads and junior Skylar Shaw added eight points in the winning effort.
“I was way happier with how we played tonight than last night,” Gross said. “We’re excited to play Westran again. They beat us in a very close game earlier in the season, and it should be a great game.”
New Franklin improves their record to 10-1 overall, the only loss was to Westran (now 6-6 overall) by four points in the opening round of the Glasgow Tournament on December 3. The top two seeds tip off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the new gym.
