The No. 2 seeded New Franklin Lady Bulldogs dashed any hopes held by the sixth-seed Lady Falcons of grabbing a spot in the New Franklin Tournament’s championship game. New Franklin defeated Fayette 44-22 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
“Now we get to play for a championship,” said New Franklin head coach Morgan Vetter. “There’s nothing better than that.”
The Lady Falcons kept up with the girls from New Franklin throughout the first half. The Bulldogs led just 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime, New Franklin expanded the lead to six points, 23-17.
Fayette was only able to muster one point on a free throw by sophomore Kaylea Felten in the third quarter, allowing New Franklin to pull ahead 31-18. With only four points scored in the fourth quarter, Fayette fell 44-22.
“We came out strong in the first half, particularly on defense,” said Fayette coach Brian Spielbauer. “We struggled offensively all night, give New Franklin credit, for wearing on us as the game went on.”
Senior Laci Fuhlage paced the Falcons with seven points while classmate Emma Chew and junior Hannah Quint each added four. Freshman LaSaydra Jackman put three points on the board for the Lady Falcons while Felten, senior Sydney Spielbauer, freshman Melissa Innes, and freshman Kay Sullivan each contributed one point apiece.
New Franklin junior Carly Dorson paced all scorers and almost singlehandedly outscored Fayette by dropping in 21 points by herself. “I feel like we had a pretty good win,” Dorson said. “Everybody contributed for the most part. We started off a little rough and were behind for a little bit. It felt good to get the win to get to the championship game since it’s been a while since we’ve won the tournament.”
Junior Addy Salmon added seven points while senior Kristen Flick put in six. Senior Abby Maupin and freshman Brooklyn Brown each added three. Juniors Kelsi Fair and Emma Rice rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.
Fayette will face fourth-seeded Pilot Grove on Friday for the third-place trophy. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in the old gym. “We’re looking forward to playing Pilot Grove,” said Spielbauer. “We are similar teams in style and it should be a great game.”
The Lady Bulldogs face the tough Community Lady Trojans who are seeded No. 1. “The opportunity is there, we need to seize it,” said Vetter. That game will get underway at 7:30 p.m. in the new gym.
