Quilt show inspired awe

“Incredible,” “awesome,” “amazing,” and just plain “wow” were just some of the reactions of visitors to the Peacemakers Quilt Show on Saturday, July 30. Held inside the sanctuary of Linn Memorial United Methodist Church, the annual show was put on in conjunction with the Fayette Festival of the Arts.

One of the Peacemakers’ goals for the show is to raise money for the Fayette Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry. Thanks to generous support for the show, the group will be able to present a check to the Food Pantry in the next few weeks. Another goal is to share the beauty of quilting with the community and provide quilters with a beautiful venue to show their work to others.

Quilters and non-quilters alike commented on the beauty, the creativity, the hours of work, the number of stitches, and the love that went into making the more than 170 quilted items in the show. The reds and greens of Christmas took center stage with a beautiful display of quilted holiday items ranging in size from king-size quilts to placemats. Christmas trees and Santas added to the festive exhibit.

The Halloween quilts displayed to the left of the stage were particularly popular with visitors to the show. Four full-size quilts which hung from the balcony were among the favorite non-holiday quilts.

In addition to organizing an annual quilt show, the Peacemakers also make quilts for the national Quilt of Valor program. They were able to display about 20 of the 59 Quilts of Valor which they have presented in a special Quilts of Valor display in the back of the church. A “flag quilt” created by Lola Watts using old neckties and brocade as well as red, white, and blue quilts added to the patriotic “Independence Day” display in the back of the sanctuary.

The Market Place, manned by Peacemaker Connie Shay and featuring Christmas ornaments, pincushions, placemats, and other quilted items, along with dish towels and quilt magazines, did a lively business throughout the show.

The Peacemakers wish to thank everyone who helped to make the Peacemakers Quilt Show a success, including those who helped set up and take down the show, those who exhibited quilts, those who attended, and those who donated to the free-will offering.

In addition, the Peacemakers extend appreciation to Commercial Trust Co. for donating funds for the booklet, the congregation of Linn Memorial and Central Methodist University for allowing them to use the sanctuary, and the Fayette Advertiser for providing coverage of the event.
