Quint homers again in loss to No. 1 Tolton

Posted

After starting softball around the age of 10, it took Hannah Quint about five years to hit one out of the park for the first time. It took less than 24 hours for her to do it again.

Quint’s homer was the only Fayette hit in a 9-2 loss to Tolton in the district semifinal on Thursday at South Callaway.

It looked like the MHSFCA No. 1 team was about to pull away from No. 9 Fayette in the third inning. The Falcons did not have a baserunner yet and Tolton had the bases loaded with one out and a 3-0 lead.

Jordyn Ball got a strikeout and a pop up to end the inning, and Breanna Estes drew a two-out walk to break up the perfect game.

Then Quint hit the ball over the center field for the second time in as many days. It was the first home run of the season given up by Tolton’s NCAA Division I bound pitcher Paige Bedsworth.

"I thought she had a great tournament," Fayette coach Mike James said about Quint. "And obviously if you hit a home run off of that girl, you’ve done something pretty special. That’s something she can remember and hopefully build on."

Quint had two of Fayette's three hits in the district tournament and drove in all six Falcon runs. Quint’s clutch hit pulled Fayette within a run, but the Trailblazers answered with a run in the fifth inning and pulled away with five runs in the sixth.

"I think Hannah has got a lot of ability and she has a lot of talent," James said.  "It was her first year as a full time starter and I think as we went along she had moments where she was really good and in other moments she looked a little overwhelmed.

"But I think she finally figured it out and had that big moment. Hopefully that is a sign of things to come because we’re definitely going to need her next year to replace some of the offense that we’re losing."

Bedsworth, a Drake University commit, struck out 15 batters as Tolton advanced. Tolton (21-3) defeated Russellville 6-3 in 11 innings to claim the district title.

"For five innings against probably one of the better teams in any class in the state of Missouri, we were a run down through 75 percent of that game," James said. "Our team, I thought, came a long way this year. It was just a tough district draw. There are going to be a lot of disappointed teams out of that district."

Fayette finished the season with a record of 18-6-1.

"We were solid all year," James said. "We really only had a game or two where we were sloppy,  and we had some big moments. We did some things that we’ve never done before. We swept the northern schools for the first time. We beat Salsibury probably for the first time in our history, we beat South Callaway for the first time in our history. So there were a lot of great moments this season.

"The Eugene win was a good signature moment to kind of cap the season off.  I thought we were a better team this year than last even though last year ended with a better pop there at the end. And we’ve got so many people back that we have a chance to be really good."
