Central Methodist Director of Athletics and former head men’s basketball coach Jeff Sherman was announced as an inductee into the 2022 class of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

As the head men’s basketball coach at CMU for 37 years, Sherman racked up 668 total victories. Upon conclusion of his final season this past March, he ranked as the fifth-winningest active coach in all of the NAIA.

“I am very appreciative, grateful, and humbled to receive this honor,” Sherman said when interviewed during the introductory press conference Wednesday at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia. “It takes a lot of people to make something like this happen. I am very appreciative that I have had such an amazing coaching staff, and tremendous players that have allowed me the opportunity to be here.”

Sherman ranks sixth on the all-time list of winningest basketball coaches in the state of Missouri among four-year colleges and was an eight-time Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honoree.

He tallied 14 20-win seasons, one 30-win season, four Heart Conference Championships, and a division championship. On the national stage, Sherman took his teams to six NAIA national tournaments and three Round of 16 finishes.

He also had 14 seasons where his teams were ranked in the NAIA Top 25. Sherman’s 1998 team was No. 2 in the country for three weeks, finishing with a 26-8 overall mark. Overall, he coached 71 all-conference players and 20 NAIA All-Americans.

Sherman also boasts an extensive coaching tree, as 75 former players have pursued the coaching profession upon completing their time with him at Central. One of those players is his son, Matt, who now helms the CMU men’s team.

Sherman is a 1978 graduate of De Beque High School in Colorado, where he was a two-time All-State selection in basketball, having scored more than 2,000 career points. He was also a three-time All-State track & field selection .

Sherman later attended Northeastern Junior College before graduating from Central Methodist in 1983. He was appointed as Central’s Director of Athletics this past March.

The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 20, at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia.
