After leading by as much as eight points in the first half, the Glasgow girls succumbed to a methodical defensive scheme by Westran, ultimately falling 48-39 in the Class 2 District 7 championship game Friday night in Glasgow.

The fourth-seeded Lady Yellowjackets advanced to the title game after taking down first-seeded and state-ranked Harrisburg in the semifinals on Wednesday, 58-48, after defeating fifth-seeded Salisbury 41-28 in the opener. Westran, the second seed, eased past seventh-seeded Slater 64-22 in the opening round and came from behind to win the semifinal game against third-seeded Marceline 39-36 in the semis.

The loss ends another fantastic season for Glasgow coach Molly Monnig and the Yellowjackets with a 21-8 overall mark.

Glasgow opened the championship game with a 7-0 run, thanks to five straight points from junior Aly Prentzler, including a 3-pointer from the right side of the arc. The Lady Jackets led 13-10 after one quarter and never trailed in the second, pulling ahead 23-19 by halftime.

But Westran coach Alex Thomas made some significant adjustments at the mid-game break. Most notably, the Hornets slowed down the pace of the game and ramped up their defense, making it difficult for Glasgow to get the ball down the court.

Neither team scored for the first three minutes of the second half until Glasgow broke through with a putback by senior Brooklynn Morris with 4:51 on the clock. Westran answered with a three by sophomore Kalynn Caroll to spark an 11-4 run over the final four and a half minutes of the third quarter to pull ahead 30-29 with eight minutes left to play.

The Hornets took control in the fourth quarter, shutting out Glasgow 9-0 over nearly six minutes to pull ahead by 10. Glasgow finally found the basket with 2:11 left to play when senior Karsyn Massie rebounded a missed shot and sank the putback. The basket sparked a 6-2 run that cut Westran’s lead to six with 1:16 left to play.

But the Hornets resumed their pace, as senior point guard Jaelyn Miller skillfully burned time off the clock. She would end the game with nine points, all from the free-throw line, as Glasgow was forced to foul.

Prentzler sank another three, this time from the top of the key with 20 seconds left to make it a five-point game. But the Hornets went 5-for-10 from the line in the final minute to preserve the win and put the game out of reach as the clock neared expiration.

The loss signaled the end of the line for four Glasgow seniors, including spectacular careers by Halle Fuemmeler and Massie.

Fuemmeler scored 2,107 points in four years for Glasgow. Massie reached two elite milestones scoring more than 1,000 points and adding more than 1,000 rebounds.

The Jackets also bid farewell to Kailey Monnig, who scored five points in the championship game, and Brooklynn Morris, who added two before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Fuemmeler was held to just three points on the night, a notable feat for the Westran defense. Massie scored 14 points and was perfect from the line, converting all four free-throw attempts.

Prentzler led Glasgow with a game-high 15 points, including three shots from the arc.

Westran finished with a balanced offense to complement its oppressive second-half defense. Eight players contributed to the scorebook, led by senior Kate Hollmann with 10 points, Miller with nine, and senior Kharigan Fuemmeler with nine. Kalynn Carroll added seven points with a pair of threes, followed by five from senior Kyleigh Carroll. Sophomore Briar Winkler added four points, followed by Jill Stephenson and Hadley Harvey with two each.

The Hornets took advantage of the foul calls, scoring 20 points off free throws in 29 chances. Glasgow sank five free throws in three trips to the line.

Westran, 20-8 overall, faced perennial powerhouse Tipton (20-8) Monday night in the Class 2 state sectional round in Harrisburg, falling 70-29. The top-seeded Lady Cardinals easily won the Class 2 District 8 title, outscoring their opponents by 88 points in just two games. They have now won nine straight district titles and finished third in the state the past two seasons after winning the Class 2 state championship in 2023.

Tipton now moves on to play Clopton in the state quarterfinals at 6 p.m. on Friday in Sturgeon The winner will advance to the semifinals at Mizzou Arena on March 11.
