State medalist thrower Vroman signs with UCM

Two-sport Fayette High School letterman Carter Vroman said he couldn’t imagine himself away from the track next year. On Friday, March 13, he officially committed to compete for the elite track & field program at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, where he will throw javelin and discus next year.

Fayette coach Stacy Menees said Vroman is happiest when he’s at the track throwing. And she should know. She’s not only his coach but also his aunt, which made Friday’s signing even more special.

“Coaching my nephew was one of the benefits of coming to work at Fayette,” she said. “He is a hard worker. I’ve seen him be that way since he was a little kid. So I’m not really surprised how well he is doing.”

Vroman is an standout athlete in two sports, track and football. He shined as a four-year starting running back for the Falcons. And while his older brother Garren, a star running back at Fayette before him, went on to play college football at Central Methodist University, Carter stuck with his passion for track, inking with one of the state’s top programs.

“I think I am more passionate about track,” Vroman said. “Ever since I started it, I’ve loved it. I can’t see myself not doing it in college. They have a great program with great coaches and lots of experience.”

His love for the sport started in seventh grade when coach Micah Brimer taught him how to throw the shot and the discus.

“He was my first throwing coach, and he really got me into the sport,” Vroman explained.

Vroman added the javelin in high school and already owns the school record at 52.1 meters. He also medaled at state his first three years, finishing as high as fourth last season. His goal this year is to break 60 meters, and he’s already well on his way only a week into practice for his senior track season.

“I think this year it’s quite possible because I have done a lot of technique work,” he said.

“He studies,” Menees said. “He’s very smart. He studies and watches his own videos and learns how to get better. He’s locked in.”

And while javelin remains his primary event, Vroman has also claimed state medals with the discus and shotput.

As a freshman, he placed eighth in javelin. His sophomore season, he added sixth-place and third-place finishes in the shotput and discus, respectively. Last season, he took the bronze with the discus while finishing fourth overall with the javelin with a distance of 51.17 meters.

Apart from earning more state medals, Vroman said it’s a personal goal to also own the school records with the shotput and discus before ending his already-distinguished high school career. “The ultimate goal is to break all the school records in throwing. I’m really close in the discus.”

Vroman will get his first chance to set new standards in the record books when the season opens Friday at the Westran Invitational. He will compete in front of the hometown fans at the FHS Relays on April 1.
