For the athletes that participated in the Russellville High School Summer Series, the 2020 track season was just three weeks long. Still, many of them made the most of those three weeks, reaching personal goals and creating excitement for the 2021 season.
Fayette’s Josh Henderson set a new personal best in the discus on Friday, finishing fourth with a throw of 158-07.
Henderson, who will be a senior, credited Fayette football coach Mike Thompson and their time in the weight room with his physical development.
“I gained 40 pounds over the last year, that helped a lot,” Henderson said. “And then just practicing, getting better with my form.”
Henderson’s best throw of the 2019 season was 153-11 in the district meet last year. He eclipsed that mark in the first meet of the Summer Series and did it again on Friday.
“I felt good,” he said. “And just getting your mind right before you throw is a big deal, especially in throws, because one little thing can screw it all up.”
The three throwers that finished ahead of Henderson on Friday all reached distances that would have won the Class 2 state championship last year.
“It was really good,” he said. “It was a lot more competitive than a normal meet because all of the classes are combined, and it was a lot of fun.”
Harrisburg’s Brayton Stephenson has also spent a lot of time in practice and in the weight room, and he’s also seeing the results. Stephenson had a personal best of 48-07 in the shot put in the July 17 meet. On Friday, he finished second with a toss of 48-06 and had a new career best in the discus with a distance of 123-03, finishing sixth.
“I like getting the chance to compete, especially since that got taken away from us this spring,” Stephenson said. “It’s awesome and who knows when we’ll get to compete again.”
Zach Henderson finished third in the javelin throw with a distance of 148-07 and ran with the first-place 4x100-meter relay. Henderson, Kaden Polson, Glasgow’s Dawson Yung, and Colder Evans from Putnam County won the race with a time of 47.39, edging the relay from Battle by less than a tenth of a second. Yung, who will be running at Central Methodist next year, also finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles.
Harrisburg’s Jace Carr showed his potential in a new event – the 300-meter hurdles, winning his heat and finishing fourth overall with a time of 45.14. He also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash.
Emma and Olivia Fischer finished third and fourth in the 3200-meter run. Wyatt Robinson finished fourth in the 400-meter dash and Wyatt Frost finished fifth in the shot put. Katie Starbuck was seventh in the 100 and 200-meter races.
