The first-seeded Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker, 9-7 in extra innings, to fourth-seeded North Callaway in the semifinals of the Class 2 District 3 Tournament Saturday night. The loss ended an otherwise spectacular season with a 29-4 overall record and a spotless mark in the Central State 8.
In a game where the score bounced back and forth, the Bulldogs took a three-run lead after two innings, but North Callaway scored three in the fourth and three more in the sixth to pull in front by three. Harrisburg tied the game at seven runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh on a three-run homer by sophomore Jacqueline Stidham, sending the game into extras.
The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the top of the eighth and erased a leadoff single by Harrisburg in the bottom of the inning with a double play.
Harrisburg singled again but would strand the runner on base as a groundout ended the season one game shy of 30 wins.
Harrisburg’s sophomore ace, Camryn Gray, struck out five batters in a complete eight-inning performance. She allowed nine runs (6 earned) on 15 hits and issued just one walk.
At the plate, the Bulldogs drove in six of their seven runs on 10 hits. Leading off, Gray went 2- for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Batting third, Stidham had two hits in four at-bats with a three-run game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Brette Ackman went 1-for-4 in her final game. Freshman Avery Hill went 1-for-4. Sophomore Lily Overfelt singled twice in four at-bats with a run scored. Sophomore Addison Doss drove in two runs and scored twice in a 2-for-4 performance.
North Callaway finished the night with five extra-base hits, including three doubles, a triple, and a home run.
