Vulgar banner denigrates president

To the Editor:

An ugly banner appeared in my neighborhood this past week-end. The people who are displaying it also fly a beautiful American flag on a tall standard, suggesting that they have respect for our country. That flag might also indicate that they respect the Office of the President of the United States, but the banner denigrates both the Office and the President personally.

I fully support free speech, and we should all take the opportunity to let our electeds know when we are unhappy (or happy) with their actions. It’s easy to do – write a letter, make a phone call, send an e-mail, or visit their office. Signs, flags, banners, and Facebook posts are not usually successful in changing behavior. The most effective way to change how our politics work is with our vote.

In 2020, 81,283,361 people voted for Joe Biden. In 2024, we will have an opportunity to vote again for President. Choose the candidate that most matches your values and support her or him with your enthusiasm and your vote. It’s the best way to facilitate change, and it’s the American way.

The banner at Randolph and Saline is not original and is very vulgar. School children walk by it or see it from their bus windows every day. I hope that the people who are displaying it will replace it with one supporting their candidate or maybe Mickey Mouse.
