New Franklin tops Harrisburg in season closer

Despite committing four errors, the New Franklin Bulldogs finished off the regular season with a 4-2 win over Harrisburg on Monday.

Originally scheduled to be played at New Franklin, due to poor field conditions after heavy rains, the game was moved to Harrisburg. 

New Franklin caps the regular season at 15-6 overall and an eight-game win streak. For Harrisburg, Monday’s loss ended a winning streak of six games and concludes the spring season at 17-8. Both teams will now prepare for the district tournaments beginning Thursday (see brackets this page).

Harrisburg scored first to take a one-run lead in the top of the fourth on a RBI single from Keagan Morris.

New Franklin answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on three consecutive singles by Tanner Bishop, Connor Wilmsmeyer, and Lane Hackman to take a two-run lead.

Harrisburg cut the deficit to one run in the top of the sixth. After reaching on an error, Bryce Ott was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Austin Starbuck.

The Bulldogs in blue added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, senior Jake Marshall sent a liner to center field to score Brandon Phillips from third to make the score 4-2.

Luke Paulson earned the win for New Franklin, surrendering one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Tanner Bishop struck out two and allowed one unearned run in one inning of relief. Drew Rhorer picked up the save with an inning pitched.

Starbuck took the loss for Harrisburg after surrendering two earned runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings on the mound. Hunter Caldwell allowed two runs (1 earned) off two hits in 1.2 innings of relief. 

At the plate, New Franklin outhit Harrisburg 6-2, all singles. Connor Wilmsmeyer stole one base for New Franklin. Harrisburg runners Carter Bremer and Morris each swiped one bag.
