Fayette BOE approves ballot language for bond issue

Posted

The Fayette Board of Education last week approved ballot language for a proposed $2 million bond issue that will be put before voters in April.

If approved, the district will sell bonds to fund improvements to its football stadium, including bleachers, a press box, a concession stand, and restrooms.

The district touts that the bond issue, if approved, will not result in increased property taxes. It will maintain the current debt service tax rate of $0.7762 per $100 of assessed valuation. However, if it fails at the ballot box, taxpayers could see a slight reduction in their yearly property tax bill.

Superintendent Brent Doolin and the school board prepared for the bond issue by paying off $1.045 million of existing debt in February, saving the district approximately $82,000 in future interest, and increasing debt service reserves to roughly $300,000. The district is also anticipating another major bond issue in 2031 to build a new high school gymnasium.

The school board meets at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library on the third Wednesday of every month except for July. Meetings are open, agendas are published in advance on the district’s website, and the public is invited.
