A 28-year-old Fayette man was killed when his car ran off the road and rolled over into a ditch Saturday morning on Hwy. 124, a few miles east of Fayette. The crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. near where the highway intersects with County Road 103.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jonathan Lucas was traveling westbound in a 2015 Dodge Journey when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway, crossed the center line, traveled off the left side of the roadway, became airborne, and overturned, submerging into a creek.
Fayette police responded as mutual aid, and an officer reportedly entered the water in an attempt to save the driver, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. Lucas was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the patrol.
A funeral will take place this afternoon at Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home in Fayette. An obituary for Lucas appears on Page 3.
