The public is invited as the Columbia Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will dedicate a Liberty Tree and a stone marker in Fayette City Park at 10 a.,m. this Saturday, May 23.
The ceremony honors the Marquis de Lafayette, the Revolutionary War hero after whom the town of Fayette is named. Lafayette served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and is celebrated as “The Hero of the Two Worlds” for his pivotal role in securing American independence and his subsequent influence in the French Revolution.
SAR members will appear in period costume and conclude the program with a salute of musket fire. Fayette High School student J. Hostetter will present a tribute to Lafayette in French.
The Sons of the American Revolution donated the disease-resistant elm tree and marker to the city as a lasting symbol of patriotism and the community’s connection to the nation’s founding 250 years ago.
