Police investigating CMS 7th-grader’s suicide

An investigation is underway regarding possible bullying after a Clark Middle School seventh-grader took her own life on Wednesday, March 18.

Zyairah Nevaeh Barney reportedly left the campus during the school day and went home. She was later found deceased.

Fayette City Marshal Bo Wells told the Advertiser there is an active and ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“I would like to ask the community to let us as law enforcement and the assisting agencies handle this and figure everything out so that we can move forward without being hindered,” Wells said. “We know that this is a very tragic occurrence, and I, personally, send out my condolences to the family and friends and the community for what’s going on. I do have a lot of faith in this community to assist when asked and come forward with information that they have.”

A Child Fatality Review Board hearing is pending. Howard County Coroner Trisha Clark stated she would not hold a coroner’s inquest.

Fayette school superintendent Brent Doolin issued a statement on Friday that said the district is providing additional support for students and staff.

“Out of respect for the family, we are not able to share specific details about this situation. We can share, however, that the well-being and safety of our students is our highest priority. The district takes all concerns regarding bullying seriously and has established clear processes to address them promptly and thoroughly.

“Students and families are encouraged to report concerns to school staff, counselors, or administrators at any time. When concerns are brought forward, they are carefully reviewed and investigated, and appropriate action is taken to support student safety and well-being. In addition, students receive ongoing guidance and support on how to recognize, report, and respond to bullying. Our focus remains on supporting our students, staff, and this family with care, compassion, and attention during this difficult time.”

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet again on Wednesday evening, although Supt. Doolin said the meeting is not related to this matter.

More than 1,000 people gathered to mourn Barney at Liberty-Paige Park in Fayette on Saturday evening.

Those gathered wore green, Zy’s favorite color, and following powerful sermons, released thousands of green balloons into what would otherwise be a beautiful blue sky amid an evening of tranquil weather just days after a cold and bitter snow.

Delivering prayers were Rev. Fatima Garikayi and Rev. Mike Jackman from St. Paul United Methodist Church. Also offering prayers and messages of hope was Pastor Tamra Bolden of the First Baptist Church Tripoli, who came all the way from Marshall to offer words of prayer, love, and peace.

A funeral for Zyairah Nevaeh Barney will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Faith Family Church in Fayette. An obituary appears on Page 3 of this newspaper.
